Myth has it that Goddess Athena quarreled with Poseidon over who would become protector of Athens and give his name to the city. To find the winner, the two Gods competed who would offer the most precious gift to the city. Athena won after donating the first tame olive tree to the Athenians and teaching them how to cultivate it to produce olive oil, “the liquid gold of nutrition”, as Homer called it. The olive tree and olive oil have since been associated with the life, economy, religion and culture of Greece. It was attributed mythical symbolism and properties and was used not only for nutritional but also for religious, aesthetic, and medical purposes. The myths and symbolism attributed to olive oil were our inspiration for the Mytholio series!
